Southwest Monsoon Advances: IMD Predicts Arrival in Mumbai by June 10

Mumbai, 7th June 2024: The India Meteorological Department reported on Thursday that the southwest monsoon has progressed into several states including Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Maharashtra, with an expected arrival in Mumbai by June 10. Additionally, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana, the remaining parts of Karnataka, and coastal Andhra Pradesh are anticipated to experience the onset of monsoon within the next three to four days.

Traditionally, the southwest monsoon season commences in June and recedes by September. On May 30, the India Meteorological Department announced the onset of the southwest monsoon in Kerala, preceding the normal onset date by two days. Notably, this year marks the first time in nearly a decade that the weather agency has forecasted above-normal rainfall for the season in its long-range predictions.

Despite the monsoon’s onset, the weather agency highlighted the continuation of heatwave conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh. Furthermore, it warned of a potential fresh heatwave spell starting from June 10 in northwest India, extending subsequently to eastern regions.

Since May 17, elevated temperatures have persisted in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, leading to heat-related fatalities in several states. Notably, on May 29, a weather station in Delhi recorded a temperature of 52.3 degrees Celsius, purportedly the highest ever recorded in the country. Similarly, Maharashtra’s Nagpur reported a temperature of 56 degrees Celsius on May 31, although the weather agency attributed both readings to potential errors in its sensors.
