Roof Plaster Collapse in Thane Injures Three, Prompts Safety Audit of Building

Thane, 17th June 2024: Three individuals sustained injuries on Sunday morning in Thane when a section of the roof’s plaster collapsed in a room, as reported by the Regional Disasters Management Cell of Thane Municipal Corporation. The injured are Pradeep Mohite, aged 46, Yash Mohite, aged 16, and Nidhi Mohite, aged 12, all of whom suffered leg and internal injuries. They received immediate medical attention at Thane Civil Hospital and were subsequently discharged after receiving first aid.

According to a Thane Municipal Corporation official, the incident occurred at Shramdan Society, a five-story building located in Kopari area, Thane. The building comprises 20 rooms, with reports indicating that the plaster in 10 to 12 rooms was in an unsafe condition. The building houses a total of 60 to 65 residents.

Sagar Patankar, a relative of the injured, stated, “My uncle Pradeep Mohite had come to Thane from Ratnagiri a month ago for his son’s treatment. Seven people were sleeping in the hall when the middle portion of the roof’s plaster collapsed on my uncle and his two children. Fortunately, the others sleeping in the corner were unharmed. I immediately informed the local police after the incident.”

The collapse affected Room No. 10, where the Mohite family and Patankar were residing. Officials from the RDMC, Fire Department, and Construction Department of TMC, including Assistant Municipal Commissioner Shankar Patole, promptly responded to the scene.

Kalidas Bhange, Thane Municipal Corporation’s Beat in Charge, stated, “Upon inspection along with senior municipal commissioners, we issued a notice declaring the structure dangerous to the residents. We advised them to vacate the rooms promptly and conduct a structural audit, submitting the report to the TMC office.”
