Roof Collapse in Thane: Senior Couple, Son Injured in Midnight Tragedy

Thane, 13th June 2024: A senior couple and their son sustained injuries when the roof of their second-floor apartment collapsed on them in Maharashtra’s Thane city, officials reported on Thursday. The incident occurred in a four-storey building shortly before midnight on Wednesday.

According to Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation, the collapse took place at Om Krishna Cooperative Housing Society in Kalwa’s Bhusar Ali area. The victims, including a septuagenarian man, his wife, and their son, were injured around 11.55 pm.

The building, approximately 35 years old, had previously been classified by the civic body as unsafe, hazardous, and unfit for habitation, necessitating evacuation and demolition, Tadvi noted.

Upon receiving the alert, teams from the local fire brigade and RDMC swiftly responded, initiating a rescue operation. They successfully evacuated approximately 100 residents from 30 flats within the building. The injured individuals—Manohar Dandekar (70), Manisha Dandekar (65), and their son Mayur Dandekar (40)—have been hospitalized for treatment. Following the incident, the building has been sealed off.

Future actions regarding the building will be determined by municipal authorities, Tadvi confirmed.
