Nota Surges in Mumbai: Emerges as Third-Highest Vote-Getter in Four Constituencies

Mumbai, 7th June 2024: In Mumbai, Nota (none of the above) emerged as the third-highest vote-getter in four out of six parliamentary constituencies, while in the remaining two, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), led by Prakash Ambedkar, secured more votes than Nota. However, it’s noteworthy that the vote count for the third position in all constituencies amounted to less than 2% of the total votes cast.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections witnessed a closely contested race between the primary candidates in each constituency, with minimal impact from third-party candidates. This is in stark contrast to the 2019 elections, where VBA had garnered between 2% and 8% of total votes across all six constituencies, relegating Nota to a distant position. In the recent elections, while the two primary contenders dominated with over 95% of the votes, the remaining approximately 5% were distributed among smaller parties, including VBA, Independents, and Nota.

Across the six constituencies, a total of 75,262 Nota votes were recorded, with the highest count (15,161) observed in the Mumbai North West constituency. In this constituency, Shiv Sena candidate Ravindra Waikar emerged victorious over Shiv Sena UBT candidate Amol Kirtikar by a narrow margin of 48 votes. In terms of percentage, Mumbai South and South Central constituencies had the highest Nota share, each accounting for 1.7% of the total votes cast.
