Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Launches Major Crackdown on Illegal Establishments

Navi Mumbai, 2nd July 2024: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has escalated its efforts to address unauthorized constructions at multiple hotels, restaurants, bars, and similar establishments, including ladies’ bars, pubs, lodges, and hookah parlours.

This crackdown follows recent incidents and directives from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, following similar initiatives in Pune, Thane, and Mumbai. The anti-encroachment drive targeted 41 establishments across Navi Mumbai under the oversight of Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde. The operation, which commenced on the night of June 30 and extended into the early hours of July 1, aimed to curb illegal extensions and the misuse of marginal spaces.

Accompanied by Additional Municipal Commissioner Sunil Pawar and Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Anti-Encroachment) Dr. Rahul Gethe, Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde personally oversaw the enforcement activities. Dr. Gethe confirmed that 23 establishments in Belapur, six in Nerul, three in Vashi, and others in Kopar Khairane, Ghansoli, and Airoli wards were scrutinized during the operation.

The Hindustan Times reported Dr Gethe emphasizing NMMC’s unwavering commitment to combatting violations, stressing a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal constructions and misuse of space.

Establishments such as VIP, Dhum Night, Night Angel, Cabana, Bebo, and Starry Night in Belapur, and Sai Darbar in Nerul, Bharti Bar in Shiravane, and Ganga Sagar Lodge near CNG Pump Sector 13 were among those targeted. In Vashi, inspections included Hotel Golden Suites and Amber Restaurant & Bar in Vashi Plaza, Sector-17.

Similar enforcement actions were conducted in Ghansoli, Koparkhairane, and Airoli, addressing unauthorized constructions and activities at various hotels, bars, pubs, and hookah parlours.

The NMMC’s initiatives were prompted by incidents such as a fatal accident in Pune involving two engineers allegedly intoxicated after visiting bars. Concerns were also raised by a video showing youths engaged in unauthorized activities at a Pune bar.

The NMMC reaffirmed its commitment to stringent regulations, aiming to safeguard public safety by preventing unauthorized activities and constructions throughout the city.
