Navi Mumbai Cyber Cell Busts Indore Call Center Scam

Navi Mumbai, 26th June 2024: The Cyber Cell of Zone II in Navi Mumbai has uncovered a fraudulent call centre in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and apprehended the main suspect, Yash Umbarkar. The investigation began with a case filed at the Kamothe police station, where the complainant had been defrauded of Rs 21.71 lakh in a trading scam. This led officials to raid fake call centres in Indore and Bengaluru.

The scammers lured victims by promising high returns on demat accounts in the share market. Eight individuals were arrested in connection with the scam, but Umbarkar had initially evaded capture.

During the investigation, Umbarkar admitted to running another call centre. Following this lead, the police raided a centre located in the Sheth Building, opposite Vasudev Pura civil hospital in Dewas, successfully dismantling the fraudulent operation. The raid resulted in the seizure of 10 desktops, 10 CPUs, and two routers.

Police reported that Umbarkar had destroyed all the data on the computers seized from the Dewas call centre. “Despite the destruction of evidence, we are making efforts to retrieve the data. The accused is currently in police custody, and the investigation is ongoing,” stated inspector Deepali Patil.

The Cyber Cell has urged citizens to be cautious of such scams, where perpetrators promise substantial returns through share market trading. In case of any cyber fraud, citizens are advised to contact the toll-free number 1930 or visit cybercrime.gov.in immediately.
