Mumbai Traffic Relief: Barfiwala Flyover-Gokhale Bridge Link Set to Open in July

Mumbai, 20th June 2024: Mumbai residents can anticipate relief from traffic congestion with the upcoming opening of the Barfiwala Flyover-Gokhale Bridge link next month. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that the project, connecting the north-side arm of the CD Barfiwala Flyover to the newly refurbished Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri, is on track for completion by mid-July. After finalizing pending tasks by July 10, an additional 12 days are required before the bridge can be opened to the public.

The BMC recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully aligning the Barfiwala Flyover parallel to the Gopalkrishna Gokhale Bridge using hydraulic jacks. This complex operation, costing Rs 8 crore and based on recommendations from experts at IIT Bombay and VJTI, marks a crucial phase in the project’s execution.

Originally constructed in 2008 to link Juhu with the north-south arms of the old Gokhale Bridge, the Barfiwala Flyover was demolished in 2022. The new Gokhale Bridge, inaugurated on February 26, 2024, now stands six meters taller than its predecessor.

Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has directed BMC officials to prioritize the connection of the north-side arm of the Barfiwala Flyover with the Gokhale Bridge at Dahisar, underscoring the critical importance of these infrastructure links for easing traffic between Andheri East and West.
