Mumbai: Maharashtra Government Slashes Diesel Tax, Petrol Prices to Drop by Rs 2 and 65 Paise

Mumbai, 28th June 2024: The Maharashtra Government recently announced a reduction in diesel and petrol taxes for the Mumbai region during the presentation of the state budget. Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ajit Pawar stated that the tax on diesel would decrease from 24% to 21%, resulting in a Rs 2 per litre reduction in diesel prices. Similarly, the tax on petrol would be reduced from 26% to 25%, leading to a decrease of 65 paise per litre in petrol prices across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane.

As of June 28, petrol prices in Mumbai were recorded at Rs 104.21 per litre, while diesel was priced at Rs 92.15 per litre.

In addition to tax adjustments on fuel, Pawar, who oversees the finance portfolio, introduced the ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana’ during his budget speech. This scheme aims to provide a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 to eligible women aged 21 to 60 years starting in July, four months ahead of the scheduled state elections in October. An annual budget allocation of Rs 46,000 crore has been earmarked for this initiative.

Furthermore, Pawar announced the ‘Mukhyamantri Annapurna Yojana’, under which eligible families of five will receive three free cooking gas cylinders annually as part of welfare measures outlined in the budget.
