Mumbai Coastal Road Phase 2 Inaugurated, Delighting Residents with Smoother Commute

Mumbai, 11th June 2024: In Mumbai, residents expressed elation as the second phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road (MCR) was inaugurated, offering a smoother commute for motorists. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde marked the occasion with a drive in a vintage Rolls Royce, signalling the commencement of the new phase.

Motorists experienced a significant reduction in travel time as they navigated through the south-north arm of the MCR, with many completing the journey from Marine Lines to Haji Ali junction in just 8 minutes, a stark contrast to the previous hour-long ordeal. The inclusion of a tunnel beneath Malabar Hill and an interchange at Haji Ali junction garnered praise from drivers traversing the Arabian Sea shore.

The remaining stretch of the project, leading up to the Bandra Worli Sea Link, is slated for completion within a month, with the entire phase anticipated to be operational by October. This development promises substantial benefits to Mumbaikars, including time and fuel savings, reduced pollution, and overall improved convenience.

One resident, Pradeep Menon, embarked on a ‘joy-ride’ from Powai to Marine Lines and back, marveling at the efficiency of the new route and its toll-free accessibility. Other motorists echoed similar sentiments, commending the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state government for delivering a vital infrastructure upgrade to the city.

Chief Minister Shinde emphasized the modern amenities integrated into the new stretch, underscoring its role in alleviating congestion and facilitating smoother travel between south and north Mumbai. Plans are also underway to extend the coastal road to Borivali in northwest Mumbai, encompassing various infrastructure enhancements such as interchanges, bridges, and tunnels, aimed at further enhancing connectivity for residents.
