Mumbai: 65-Year-Old Evading Trial in 1993 Communal Riots Case Arrested

Mumbai, 2nd July 2024: The Mumbai police recently apprehended a 65-year-old man, Sayyed Nadir Shah Abbas Khan, in connection with a case from the 1993 communal riots, for which he had been granted bail but subsequently evaded trial. Khan, a driver, faced charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code related to rioting and unlawful assembly. Despite earlier arrests by the Rafi Ahmed Kidwayi Marg police, Khan went missing after securing bail, failing to appear for court proceedings.

Law enforcement efforts to locate Khan were prolonged, with his family consistently claiming he was not at home whenever police visited. Recently, authorities obtained his mobile number and scrutinized its call records, pinpointing his return home scheduled for June 29.

Police subsequently deployed a surveillance operation around Khan’s residence, successfully apprehending him upon his arrival. Khan has since been remanded back into judicial custody, marking his return to legal proceedings after 29 years.
