Maharashtra Police Sub Inspector Accused of Raping Married Woman Constable in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai, 24th June 2024: A 32-year-old police sub-inspector in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai township is facing accusations of raping a 26-year-old married woman constable. As per an official statement on Sunday, a case has been filed under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code against the individual for alleged acts of rape and harassment towards the constable. The incidents reportedly occurred between 2020 and July 2022 in the Sanpada area.

Reportedly, the accused and the victim, both employed by the Mumbai Police, developed a friendship. Subsequently, the accused is said to have sexually assaulted her under false promises of marriage, with multiple occurrences taking place at a residence in Sanpada.

The accused is also alleged to have taken Rs 19 lakh from the victim on various pretexts. While a significant portion of the amount (Rs 14.61 lakh) was returned by the accused, he continued to harass the woman, pressuring her to abandon her marital relationship. Threats of harm were made by the accused if she did not comply.

Initially, a complaint was lodged at the Pant Nagar police station in Mumbai, leading to the registration of a ‘Zero’ FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to rape, repeated assault, sexual harassment, stalking, criminal intimidation, and cheating against the accused. The case was later transferred to the Sanpada police station for further investigation. A Zero FIR allows for the filing of a complaint at any police station, regardless of territorial jurisdiction, and can subsequently be transferred to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
